Vern Takes Flight

Did you know that Vern can fly? This past week he had surgery. For days afterwards, he lay around in a lethargic state. It was clear he was hurting and only wanted to rest in front of the fire. Bee, Vern’s sister, was very happy with her brother’s state of mind. She was hoping that this would be how he would be. But once he felt better, Vern began to fly.

When was the last time you felt like you could fly? When life was set on glide and you were breezing through circumstances without any obstacles to bring you down. And just when you thought you could reach the clouds, a sense of depression took over or a sorrowful event grounded you. Or has discouragement kept you from reaching for your wings and taking off?

James 4:7-10 might be the words which can set you off again. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Isn’t it crazy how often we need to be brought down before we can put on our wings and fly?  So instead of seeing only the negative in your lowly circumstances, come before the Lord and trust in his will for your life. And wait and watch for how God will lift you up.

As for Vern, ever since his surgery, he has been jumping up higher. Last night he jumped up on our bed, something he has never been able to do before. It’s almost like he takes flight. Now we are in the dilemma of how to prevent him from getting up on our bed. Oh well.   That’s an issue for another day.
