The Treasure of it All

Vern’s bottom was plastered across the pillows as he leaned towards the window with hopes of spotting his favorite person. Even though the black truck had just pulled out, Vern was still hopeful that it would return sooner than later.

But as the minutes ticked by, the black dog wouldn’t leave his position. He continued to have his head pointed forward and body erect as he waited for the truck and the driver’s return.

How often do we stop everything we are doing to wait? And as we position ourselves in this limbo state, what are we missing out on? Each day has hidden treasures just waiting to be found. If only we could take our sites off of the jewels down the path of life and fix them on the everyday riches surrounding us.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and in his joy he went and sold all he had and bought that field.” (Matthew 13:44)

Life is a field with treasures that God has hidden, unique to each of us. If we can take our eyes off of what we think is best for ourselves and place our sites on God’s hidden riches, we will discover the true meaning of our existence and be filled with a sense of satisfaction that comes only from above.

Vern finally fell asleep as he waited until the return of the black truck, only to be awakened by the sound of the motor as it pulled into the driveway. He quickly dashed across the floor, through the doggy door, and into the screened in porch where he was greeted by his favorite person. And as I looked at the interaction, I had to smile at the treasure of it all.
